Wholesale trade sales increase

Wholesale trade sales increased by 8.3% year on year in September 2013‚ Stats SA announced on Thursday.

However‚ they fell 0.3% compared with August‚ after month-on-month increases of 0.5% in August 2013 and 0.9% in July 2013.

In nominal terms wholesale trade sales increased by 15.3% in September 2013 compared with September 2012‚ mainly driven by 15.4% growth in solid‚ liquid and gaseous fuels and related products‚ contributing 3.5 percentage points to the overall figure.

Machinery‚ equipment and supplies grew 22.1% and contributed 2.9 percentage points‚ while food‚ beverages and tobacco was 16.4% up and contributed 2.5 percentage points.

Wholesale trade sales increased by 14.2% in the third quarter of 2013 compared with the third quarter of 2012.
