Consumer crusader Isabel Jones dies

BREAKING NEWS: Veteran consumer journalist and foodie Isabel Jones died in hospital this morning, Tuesday, 11 March 2008. She was admitted to the ICU at the weekend suffering from breathing problems and her condition deteriorated. She underwent open heart surgery in December 2007.

Bizcommunity.com media and marketing specialist, Chris Moerdyk, who was related to Jones by marriage, said in a tribute to her this morning that he would miss her very much. “She was a woman for whom honest answers were a way of life. For whom justice was the only goal.

“The South African consumer owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Isobel Jones. No one will ever fully appreciate the enormous contribution she has made to the corporate sector becoming so much more consumer friendly than it was three decades ago.”

Speaking on Talk Radio 702 this morning, her son Alan Jones, paid tribute to his mother, saying, “It was wonderful having her as a mother.”

Jones was best known for her investigative ‘snooping' on the “Fair Deal” TV series in which she steadfastly ‘stood her ground' for the man on the street and her many years as the consumer watchdog columnist on the Sunday Times. She was also a respected food editor.

News24.com and The Times Online report that Jones, who underwent a heart operation in December, was not feeling well on Friday and was admitted to hospital.
