The food writers' judging panel comprised well-known South African food writer and television personality, Ina Paarman; award-winning local chef, Luke Dale-Roberts; cook book author and travel, nutrition and food writer and stylist, Dorah Sitole and renowned foodie stylist and writer, Anna Montali.
The judging process was completed over a two-week period, with each judge having the opportunity to individually go through each entry and give each entrant a preliminary score. The panel then met in Johannesburg on 8 October to present their scores, which were tallied up to identify the top scoring finalists in the two main categories and the three affiliated categories.
This list was whittled down to the current finalists and from this, the respective winners selected. There was much debate around the selection of the finalists and winners, with each judge providing strong motivations for their choices.
The judging in the health writer award category took place independently of the food writers' adjudication. Here health judges, registered dietician Madeleine de Villiers, and emeritus associate professor in nutrition and dietetics and part-time consultant, Martinette Stretch, selected the most outstanding pieces of writing that also offered the most balanced reporting on health and nutritional issues.
The winners' names will be revealed at the official awards ceremony, to be held on 24 October 2014 at the Waterkloof Wine Estate in Somerset West.
