Industry news: Optimizing workflow

With the number of cardiac patients expected to rise by 34% over the next four years, cardiologists are facing a dramatic increase in the number of people that require treatment, a figure which is set to double by 2017.

At the same time, the amount of diagnostic information available – from a wide range of imaging systems – will also continue to rise, making diagnosis more complex.

During interventional procedures, in particular, the cardiologist requires as much information as possible about the patient's physiology. In order to obtain accurate data, scans from different systems such as MR, CT and CV X-ray, need to be combined, often requiring the patient to be moved to various different parts of the hospital to obtain these different scans. Partnering with clinicians specializing in cardiovascular care, Philips has designed speedy and simple cardiology solutions which help overcome this.

With Comprehensive Cardiac Analysis (CCA) and CT TrueView, physicians can substantially speed up and simplify a cardiac CT evaluation, opening the doorway to quicker, more accurate analysis for the operator and faster clinical results. CCA provides a wealth of powerful analysis tools based on total heart segmentation, enabling entire coronary tree visualization, vessel lumen morphological analysis and free lumen diameter/area analysis, thanks to a cross-sectional view of the artery in question.

By importing this data into the CT TrueView function, practitioners can preplan an interventional procedure by defining areas of interest and optimal C-Arm angles, and at a later stage, export to the cath lab. Having this data available in the cath lab means that physicians possess a more complete view of the anatomy for the treatment and planning of invasive procedures involving conditions like ischemia, arrhythmia and heart failure.

By combining these different solutions in a single device, Philips ensures that patients can stay in one place, reducing stress and operation delays and improving physical and emotional comfort for the patient and practitioner.
