Telkom and Icasa settle dispute

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) reports that Telkom and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) have settled the dispute that arose when Telkom implemented tariff adjustments in January this year.

While full details and comments about the agreement are expected soon, initial reports suggest that no changes will be made to current tariffs. Rather, from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2004 Telkom will forfeit R320 million in revenue from the total allowable tariff increase for
that period.

Other commitments by Telkom include the introduction of a system from July 2002 whereby defaulting customers can receive incoming calls and make calls to emergency numbers, as well as the introduction of packages that will cater for the needs of internet users.
