Dr Pemba, who died in 2001, is said to be referred to as the grand master of South African art and is internationally recognised as one of South Africa's great artists. His artworks, spanning 60 years, have become a significant symbol used to promote tolerance among cultures that are as diverse as his art.
"Stamps are often used to commemorate those who have made a significant difference in our history and the way we see the world today," says Johan van Wyk, senior manager of philatelic services at the South African Post Office. "For that reason we are honoured to launch the Dr George Pemba stamp series, which depicts the works of one of South Africa's most prolific artists, especially during the years of oppression."
