Type students excel
In Johannesburg, the South African assessments of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) assessment scheme have just finished and 15 students have passed the scheme and will thus be invited to join the society. The scheme is run on an annual basis and takes place in four countries.
The assessment scheme is now in its 29th year and strives to encourage high quality typography at a student level within local institutions. Students are given a variety of complex and conceptually demanding briefs from which to choose and, should they pass the assessments, are invited to join the society as a qualified typographer.
This year, six local institutions which run design courses entered the competition, resulting in a total of 35 entries. The institutions were AAA School of Advertising, North West University, University of Pretoria, Vega The Brand Communications School, Vaal University of Technology and Inscape Design College.
The students who passed the scheme were:
- North West University: Raché Kitching, Maryke Naude, Marli Lyon (Merit), Lia Schutte, Francois Bothas, Wynand Botha, Ranier Zandberg and Christo Kruger.
- AAA School of Advertising: Modimole Modise, Zanele Zondi, Suria Erasmus and Teritha Mellet (Merit).
- Vega The Brand Communications School: Kgomotso Mashigo and Angela Kayton.
- University of Pretoria: Susan Badenhorst
