The minister wants more matrics taking Maths. CambriLearn is enrolling Grade 10s for 2027

CambriLearn is enrolling Grade 10 learners for 2027, and the accredited online school is asking parents of this year’s Grade 9s to look carefully at one choice on the subject form: Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.

On 11 October 2026, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube warned that competition for higher matric pass rates had encouraged schools to steer learners towards Mathematical Literacy instead of Mathematics. She said this undermined the development of skills in Stem professions, accounting and economic sciences.

She announced that provincial performance would be ranked using a broader set of indicators, including learner retention and participation and performance in gateway subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting and Economics.

The Department of Basic Education’s 2025 NSC examination report puts Mathematics participation at 34.1% of the full-time candidates who wrote the examinations. Most wrote Mathematical Literacy.

Mathematics is an entry requirement for many engineering, science and commerce degrees. Subject choices can therefore affect which programmes a learner is eligible to apply for, alongside their marks and the university’s requirements.

For learners entering Grade 10 in 2027, matric is three school years away. The choice deserves careful consideration now, taking account of their strengths, interests and possible study plans.

Support for gateway subjects

CambriLearn teaches CAPS from Grade RR to matric, with Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Accounting among its Grade 10 subjects.

Standard and Premium packages combine structured coursework, teacher-marked assessments and access to live lessons in selected subjects, taught by qualified teachers. Available lesson recordings help learners revisit the teaching. Both packages include timed mock examinations for CAPS Grades 10 to 12.

Families can choose their support package subject by subject. A learner who needs more help with Mathematics can take Premium in that subject, adding live Q&A sessions and direct teacher messaging, while taking Standard in others.

CambriLearn publishes its school fees by subject and package, so parents can compare combinations before speaking to admissions.

Academic support consultants monitor progress and contact families when concerns arise. Parents can use CambriCommand to follow attendance, marks and progress during the term. Since October, they have also been able to connect their CambriLearn account to Claude and ask about their child’s schoolwork in their own words.

Choosing a qualification pathway

CambriLearn’s CAPS learners work towards the National Senior Certificate through SACAI. Its IEB pathway follows the CAPS curriculum with IEB assessment. Both lead to the same National Senior Certificate, issued by Umalusi.

IEB enrolments are open for Grades 10 and 11 for 2027, with Grade 12 planned for 2028.

The school also offers International British and Pearson Edexcel pathways leading to International GCSE and AS/A Level qualifications. Learners planning to enter a South African university with these qualifications need to meet the Universities South Africa Matriculation Board’s exemption requirements, as well as the subject and mark requirements of their chosen degree.

The school around the subjects

With roots in online education dating to 2008, CambriLearn reports having educated more than 80,000 students and serving families in more than 100 countries. The school caters for learners aged four to 19. It is accredited by Cognia, is an approved Pearson Edexcel centre and is registered with SACAI and the IEB.

CambriCommunity connects learners through clubs, study groups and regional meetups. Community access is included for eligible learners; some activities carry additional fees and availability varies by age and location.

Families who want a study space and adult support during the day can also explore the independently operated partner learning hubs listed by CambriLearn across South Africa.

CAPS, KABV and IEB course access for 2027 activates on 11 January. Families can talk to admissions for a free consultation about the pathway, subject choices and level of support that would suit their child.
