GoTyme Bank leads on every service theme. Frozen accounts, missing payments and fraud claims drive the rest of the sector's scores down.
South Africa's banks average 1.3 out of 5 on customer experience, according to The State of South African Banking Reputation 2026, a benchmark published today by Hellopeter, the country's largest consumer review platform.
The report is built on Hellopeter's AI analysis of the 12 months of customer reviews to September 2026. It scores 10 banks on five service themes: account access and management, digital banking and security, transactions and dispute resolution, customer service and communication, and staff and branch experience.
GoTyme Bank, formerly TymeBank, scores 3.1 and leads all five themes. The other nine banks score between 0.7 and 1.3:
The gap of 1.8 points between the leading bank and the next is the widest between first and second place of any industry Hellopeter scores. Only three of the 41 industry groups in Hellopeter's analysis have a lower average than banking.
The report finds that customers rate bank staff far better than bank processes. Staff and branch experience is the highest-scoring theme at every bank scored on it, averaging 2.1, while account access and transactions both average 1.1. Customers routinely name the consultant who solved their problem, then describe the systems behind that consultant failing them: accounts frozen for Fica or fraud checks without warning, payments between banks that disappear, and complaints closed without anyone making contact.
Customer feedback is also moving in the wrong direction. Of the 49 theme scores in the benchmark, 29 show feedback getting worse over the past year and one shows it improving. Digital banking and security is declining at nine of the 10 banks.
"Banking scores lower than almost any industry we measure," said Alon Rom, CEO of Hellopeter. "Customers keep telling us the same thing: the staff try hard, but the system lets them down. GoTyme shows a bank can fix that, and its customers have noticed."

About the data
Scores are generated by Hellopeter's AI analysis of public, verified customer reviews and reflect the 12 months to September 2026. Hellopeter does not set or adjust them, and neither do the banks. They measure customer experience as described in reviews, not a bank's financial strength, the safety of deposits, its products or its fees. Scores update as new reviews arrive; the current score for any bank is on its Hellopeter profile.
