SA-Korean duo behind Bephor is giving K-beauty hair care Mzansi flair

In 2025, South Africa accounted for 3.3% of the global K-beauty products market. While most K-beauty shelves in the country are dominated by skincare, Grand View Research says hair care is the most lucrative and fastest-growing segment. From Arc Store introducing Cosrx’s Peptide-132 hair care line to Bephor making K-beauty hair care for textured hair, SA consumers have plenty of reasons to let their hair down.

According to Grand View Research, the South Africa K-beauty products market is expected to reach $9.1m by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 11.1% from 2026 to 2033.

The appeal of Korean hair care largely lies in its formulation as scalp skincare, especially as many consumers favour the “skinification” (using skincare-grade formulas across beauty categories) of their hair care.

In its Comprehensive Guide To Longevity Across Beauty & Wellness report, Spate found that scalp care has become the foundation of consumers’ hair care and overall hair health.

South African hair care needs differ from those in the rest of the world. Type 4 hair, including coily and kinky patterns 4A, 4B, and 4C, is common across much of the country.

That creates a huge market for K-beauty hair care products made for Type 4 hair.

Enter Bephor (a portmanteau of beauty and metaphor), the first-of-its-kind hair care brand that blends Korean skincare science with textured-hair expertise for the Type 4 hair care market.

South African entrepreneur Nolu Mkhonza and Korean skincare innovator June Lim joined forces to create a hair care line that blends premium Korean herbal extracts and fermentation techniques with deeply nourishing staples like shea butter and coconut oil.

The brand’s Braid Rev collection addresses the specific structural needs of coily hair and the scalp’s delicate nature under styling tension.

They recently spoke to Bizcommunity about the appeal of K-beauty, the need for scalp care for textured hair, and how they combine local expertise with Korean skincare science.

What was the inspiration for the brand name?

June Lim: In true Korean fashion, we loved the idea of blending two meaningful words into something totally new! Bephor combines “beauty” and “metaphor”.

All of our products are built on diversity, inclusion, and integration.

We believe that when different cultures, perspectives, and technologies collide, they create a new definition of beauty — that’s where the “metaphor” comes in!

So, combining the two gave us Bephor. It’s not just a cute name; we promise that everyone deserves to embrace, respect, and love their own unique beauty.

Nolu Mkhonza: African women are so wonderfully diverse and gorgeous, and our hair is art — it morphs us into a whole new version of ourselves with every single style!

So when we say “Beauty is a metaphor,” it’s a love letter to African women everywhere.

You are beautiful exactly as you are. You never have to change who you are for the world.

At Bephor, we’re here to watch, listen, study, care for that art, and craft products made especially for you.

Why is scalp care important, especially for textured hair?

Mkhonza: Growing up, most of us were only ever taught to “base” our scalps with heavy oils to stop dryness — nobody actually taught us how to care for it properly.

Textured and tightly coiled hair has a unique curl pattern that makes it hard for natural oils to travel down to the ends, leaving hair prone to dryness and breakage.

If you understand this, you will understand why caring for your scalp becomes even more important.

Lim: That’s why I will always say: The scalp is the soil, and your hair is the tree!

If the soil isn’t nourished, nothing flourishes.

Taking the time to understand how textured hair actually grows changed everything for us at Bephor.

Scalp care isn’t just about making hair look pretty for the day — it’s about creating the ultimate healthy foundation so your crown can truly thrive.

What appeals to you about K-beauty?

Lim: K-beauty evolved in one of the most demanding markets on earth.

Korean consumers don’t just buy a product because a celebrity wears or uses it — they inspect ingredients, efficacy, safety, and real results.

That pressure forces the industry to innovate under strict CGMP quality standards and rigorous testing.

For us, K-beauty isn’t a fleeting trend; it’s high-tech, uncompromising quality and safety that we’ve woven straight into Bephor’s DNA.

Mkhonza: Korean formula technology is easily decades ahead, and being the very first textured haircare brand to harness it is a total dream come true!

Getting to build products with the best formulation tech in the world — alongside a team that believes in this vision as fiercely as we do—is an absolute honour.

We’re taking world-class K-beauty science and making it work specifically for our hair.

A lot of Korean haircare products aren’t necessarily formulated for textured hair — a gap Bephor is now filling. How important was local expertise in creating the products?

Lim and Mkhonza: It was 100% essential! Even the most mind-blowing technology is useless if it doesn’t solve real, daily struggles.

That’s why every Bephor product starts with deep consumer research.

We gather real frustrations from textured hair consumers, combine that data with local insights, and then hunt down the right traditional Korean ingredients and K-beauty formulation tech.

Honestly, customer feedback is the heartbeat of our creation process. June and I read product reviews like our lives depend on it!

We actively seek out feedback — and because Korean formulation-to-action loops are lightning fast, we can refine and perfect things in a few months.

Our products hit the spot because we actually listen, adapt, and build specifically for what our community needs.

What makes Bephor stand out from other products?

Lim: Two big things: our hard science and our holistic philosophy.

While many brands focus on a single trendy ingredient, nobody buys just an oil — they buy the finished product!

We run clinical efficacy tests with top international labs to prove real before-and-after results on the complete formulation, while sticking to our “one product, one patent” rule.

Rooted in Eastern philosophy, we focus on gentle, long-term health. True beauty starts with a healthy foundation — not temporary illusions.

Mkhonza: It’s also our heart, our story, and how June and I came together — our why.

It’s about two very different worlds colliding to create something long-lasting and uniquely beautiful!

We’re doing this because every African woman and child deserves products created with deep love, care, and world-class innovation.

We want to help our community achieve their natural beauty through a healthy scalp and healthy hair. That’s what true beauty means to Bephor.

Where can consumers find the products, and what’s next for the brand?

Lim and Mkhonza: Right now, you can find us in the US, Canada, the UK, and several African countries through select boutique stockists.

Back home in South Africa, we’re available online at Hallyu Korean Skincare and Takealot — with our eyes set on larger retail shelves as we grow!

But for us, the next chapter isn’t just about sticking flags on a global map.

We are building a heartfelt movement centred around self-love, self-respect, and helping people discover their true, authentic beauty.

Moving forward, we want to give our community an active voice in where we go next and how we expand.

Ultimately, our dream is to become the global K-beauty authority for textured hair, helping generations—from their very first hair care routine and beyond — nourish healthy hair and wear it with pride.

Finally, what’s your favourite product?

Lim: Hands down, the Bephor Braid Rev Scalp Cleansing Toner!

We created it to tackle classic protective style struggles — buildup, itch, and scalp odour.

It cleanses, replenishes, and keeps your scalp’s pH and moisture balanced with anti-inflammatory care. (Fun fact: I even sneak it into my post-shave routine to soothe razor burns and itching!)

This toner isn’t just my favourite — it’s the soul of Bephor in a bottle.

Mkhonza: The Scalp & Hair Sleeping Balm has my whole heart!

It gives my scalp deep hydration and leaves my hair with this ridiculously silky, sophisticated shine.

And the scent? Listen, June and I nearly lost our minds (and our sanity!) perfecting it, so every time someone falls in love with the scent, a tiny angel gets its wings LOL!

The best part: Zero grease, zero oil stains on my pillowcase—just wake-up-and-go, soft, healthy hair.
