Google has launched a free online learning hub that allows South Africans to access more than 15 digital and artificial intelligence (AI) training programmes, with lessons that can be downloaded and completed offline.
Called Skilling Africa with Google, the platform brings together existing Google training programmes covering AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing and small business development.
The hub is designed to work on entry-level smartphones and slower internet connections, with learners able to download lessons over Wi-Fi and complete them without using mobile data.
No app download is required. Users can access the platform by signing in with a Google account.
AI training and support for learners
The hub includes Google's Career Certificates, which offer training in fields such as data analytics, IT support and cybersecurity, as well as Hustle Academy for small business owners and Google Cloud Skills for developers.
It also features an AI study companion called Scout, which can answer questions, explain unfamiliar terms and help learners plan study schedules.
Learners can track their progress through visual skill trees and earn verifiable badges after completing courses, which they can share with prospective employers or clients.
Google said it is also adding support for more African languages, with isiZulu and isiXhosa among the first planned additions. English, Swahili and Arabic are currently available.
Google targets three million learners by 2030
The launch forms part of Google's ambition to equip three million people across Africa with digital and AI skills by 2030. The company has set an initial target of 250,000 graduates by the end of 2026.
Google said the initiative responds to growing demand for practical AI and cloud skills across the continent, where more than 90% of employers reportedly struggle to find people with these capabilities.
The company also pointed to an estimated $2.9tn economic opportunity linked to AI in Africa.
Skilling Africa with Google builds on the more than seven million young Africans who have already completed foundational digital training through Google's programmes.
The platform is free and open to students, job seekers, entrepreneurs and developers.
