Black Cat launches new 1kg Creamia peanut butter as households chase value

Black Cat is marking its centenary by expanding its peanut butter range with Creamia, a new variant designed to tap into South African consumers’ demand for taste, value and products suited to everyday household consumption.

The new Black Cat Creamia is positioned as a smoother, creamier and sweeter alternative to the brand’s original peanut butter, with the launch also introducing a 1kg pack aimed at giving households more product at an accessible price point.

The move comes as food shoppers continue to scrutinise household spending and look for ways to balance affordability with quality and taste.

For Black Cat, the proposition is less about premiumisation and more about delivering additional value within a familiar household category.

More product for everyday consumption

Creamia has been developed around the idea of increased everyday usage, from breakfast and school lunchboxes to snacks and family meals.

The 1kg format gives the product a larger household pack option, while its sweeter and creamier profile is intended to broaden the ways consumers can use peanut butter.

“We know that South Africans are looking for products that deliver on taste, quality and value,” says Thabiso Masehla, marketing manager at Tiger Brands.

“With Black Cat Creamia, we wanted to create something magical that feels and tastes like what consumers expect from us while still making sense for every member of the household. The smoother, creamier and sweeter taste gives consumers more of what they love without making everyday shopping feel like a compromise.”

Extending a century-old brand

The launch forms part of Black Cat’s 100-year milestone, giving the brand an opportunity to balance heritage with product development aimed at current consumer needs.

Rather than relying solely on brand familiarity, Creamia adds a new proposition to the portfolio while retaining the Black Cat identity.

The packaging has also been refreshed for the new variant, with a distinct look intended to differentiate Creamia on shelf while maintaining visual links to the established brand.

For a household FMCG brand with a century of history, the launch illustrates the challenge of remaining relevant across generations: protecting the familiarity that underpins brand equity while introducing products that respond to changing shopping behaviour.

Value becomes part of the proposition

Creamia enters the market at a time when value has become an increasingly important consideration in grocery purchasing.

For everyday staples such as peanut butter, consumers can weigh pack size, price, taste and versatility when deciding which products make it into the household basket.

Black Cat is therefore positioning Creamia around a combination of product experience and affordability, with the 1kg format reinforcing the value proposition.

The launch gives the brand another way to compete for household consumption occasions while using its existing equity to introduce a variant aimed at contemporary shopping needs.

As Black Cat celebrates 100 years in South African homes, Creamia represents a forward-looking extension of the brand — using an established category and familiar brand credentials to offer consumers more choice within an everyday grocery staple.

Black Cat Creamia is currently in store at leading retailers such as Pick n Pay and Checkers.
