At a time when South Africa continues to face significant school infrastructure backlogs, the long-standing partnership between Absa and the Nelson Mandela Legacy Ride4Hope is helping create better learning environments for children through the delivery of classrooms where they are needed most.
Over the course of the partnership, a total of 12 classrooms have been delivered across four schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, providing learners with safer and more conducive spaces in which to learn.
The latest milestone is the completion and handover of three newly built and fully furnished classrooms at Giyani Primary School in Soweto, made possible through support from Absa Corporate and Investment Banking's Corporate Citizenship programmes.
The classroom developments form part of the #Classrooms4Hope initiative, which focuses on improving foundation-phase education infrastructure in underserved communities. Originally centred on providing school uniforms, food parcels and classroom resources, the initiative has evolved into a programme that delivers long-term infrastructure solutions to support future generations of learners.
According to the Department of Basic Education, thousands of schools across South Africa still require additional classrooms and learning facilities, highlighting the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to help address infrastructure challenges.

The ninth edition of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Ride4Hope brought together more than 100 cyclists, including 10 Absa colleagues, to raise awareness and mobilise support for education initiatives. The ride continues to serve as a platform that unites partners, supporters and communities around a shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities for young people.
Beyond financial support, Absa colleagues participated in volunteer activities at the school following the handover, including a reading programme aimed at encouraging literacy and a love for learning among foundation-phase learners.
The handover ceremony brought together representatives from the Nelson Mandela Foundation, government, community leaders, educators, learners and private-sector partners in a shared commitment to improving educational outcomes for South Africa's children.
