Help make journalism in SA better

As part of countering threats against media freedom, the Press Council of South Africa is reviewing its constitution, the SA Press Code and its complaints procedure. All interested South Africans - both individuals and organisations - are invited to help the council improve self-regulation of the press in South Africa by sending in suggestions by Friday, 15 October 2010.

Still talking about media freedom, this morning, Monday, 20 September 2010, saw the start of the ANC's national general meeting (#NGC) in Durban - not that media and delegate accreditation went smoothly at all... It appears that not only are the ANC provincial structures gunning for the proposed media appeals tribunal, but that the ruling party also wants a chapter 9 watchdog to regulate the print industry with a print/media charter, as well as its own radio and TV channels. (By the way, the launch of The New Age has been postponed until late October, except for a special Heritage Day edition.)

On a different note, I'd like to congratulate my colleague Shan Radcliffe, the editor of our Retail portal and newsletter who is currently off on maternity leave, on the birth of her first child: a bouncing baby boy. On behalf of the rest of the team, I wish her much joy and happiness (and not too many sleepless nights)!

A luta continua!

SA Press Council to 'remake' self-regulation, journalism
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] In the face of threats by the ruling ANC to establish a media appeals tribunal (MAT), the South African Press Council said it was seizing this opportunity to take a closer look at how it conducts its business by reviewing its constitution, its complaints procedure and the SA Press Code. It is thus inviting all interested individuals and organisations to submit their suggestions by Friday, 15 October 2010, to help it 'remake' the quality of journalism in SA. Read more >>

Lessons from history on press freedom
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] The simple lesson from history is that governments with a genuine desire for community upliftment are those that embrace freedom of speech and the media. Those governments that restrict the opinions of citizens and muzzle the press, even in the slightest way, have proved, without exception, to be governments that are desperate to retain power.
