Watchdog to watch the media?

So on the one hand President Jacob Zuma keeps on telling us that the ANC is fully committed to media freedom, SANEF and the ruling party have had a "robust but useful" discussion and have agreed (to disagree) and continue holding ongoing discussions - yet on the other hand the Gauteng ANC's provincial general council is now calling for a media watchdog, to run in parallel with the proposed media appeals tribunal, to "regulate" newspapers, as reported by Times Live? Is this really a step forward?

This week sees the Gauteng launch of the Right2Know movement, an umbrella body of over 200 civil society organisations which is taking on the ANC-led government's Protection of Information Bill in its current format. The Chalsty Centre at Wits University's School of Law in Johannesburg will be the venue for the launch and an intense public information session this Wednesday, 15 September 2010, at 11.30am.

Remember to keep yourselves informed by monitoring our #ZAmediafreedom Twitterfall and reading our dedicated section on media freedom and make your voices heard now, before it is too late.

A luta continua!

Special focus on media freedom

ANC, SANEF agree to continue to disagree
[Mandy de Waal: @mandyldewaal] In "robust talks" at ANC headquarters at Luthuli House in Johannesburg late last week, media editors and the ruling party butted heads over the media appeals tribunal, the Protection of Information Bill and relationships. They did agree on a way forward marked by mutual discussion, though how that'd happen is still up in the air. Read more >>

Media freedom: where did SA media go wrong?
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Juniorisation of newsrooms, inadequate coverage of key human rights issues, gender, racism, children and poverty, lack of balance and accuracy, lack of stories about the country's progressive legislation, xenophobic, ownership concentration, and following political parties' agenda rather than citizens during elections. These are some of the 'serious charges' formulated by the Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) against the SA media. Read more >>

Digital media, TV fight for audiences
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Recent statistics show that an average person spends about 14 hours per week watching TV, and spends the same amount of time online. Digital media's share of worldwide advertising has almost doubled from 8% in 2008 to 15% in 2009. How to write a helluva speech, yourself [Part I]
