I am angry today, saddened and stunned at the images and news filtering through after days of utter barbarism in Gauteng: The Times front page pic of a man burning to death, while onlookers laugh, says it all. The video is up on its site but I couldn't watch it; we saw too much death in the late '80s and early '90s in South Africa and those are images I hoped we would never have to see again. How ironic that this week the International Media Forum is in South Africa to host senior local and international journalists to talk to politicians and communicators about South Africa's image and how it is projected abroad, as well as how to deal with the international media. And what were the images being flashed on global news channels this morning? Rioters on the streets of the Johannesburg CBD in gun battles with police and video of people being burnt to death! On the agenda for discussion at the IMF is: how international communications affects economic development in SA; the importance of the South Africa story; how media is changing; and how to get positive results in international media... I'd like to know how many marketing dollars it's going to take to explain the events over the last few days in SA to the international investment community, not to mention FIFA, when we ourselves are still trying to understand.

SA/Hollywood Exchange succeeds again
The South African/Hollywood Exchange Programme, produced by MediaXchange and Metal Moon in Hollywood last month, had the South African delegation of media professionals hard at work during an intensive five-day schedule that included 18 back-to-back meetings in the board rooms of some of Hollywood's most powerful players. “We learnt that there is particular interest in formats and animation which offers great opportunity for aspiring animators/scribes/directors - in shorts, for starters,” says Metal Moon chief executive Dezi Rorich, who represented the SA group.

Moving from good to great photography
Big-budget marketing and advertising campaigns are generally heavy on the images, and that means calling in professional photographers. The hardest part is deciding who will do the job best. Bizcommunity.com takes a look under the covers at a professional shoot to see what Bryan Traylor of Locker 14, an American-born and Los Angeles trained photographer who settled in Cape Town four years ago, does to get that indefinable ‘specialness'.

Trouble is, very few companies bother to have these documents professionally proofread to ensure that grammar and spelling are correct.

Radio
Radio needs to stop being insular
[Chris Moerdyk] The more marketers I talk to these days, the more I keep getting the same sense of frustration about the mass media in South Africa, mainly because most media reps have this annoying and naive habit of trying to persuade advertisers that their medium is the one and only. The worst are radio stations.

Ambush the Olympics? Not even sponsors want it!
