Bizcommunity.com head office in Cape Town has officially moved into our new premises in the old Mowbray cinema which was revamped into spectacular double volume offices. The new address is: 24 On Main, Main Road, Mowbray, Cape Town. The new contact numbers are: tel +27 (0)21 680 3500 and fax +27 (0)21 685 1045. Bizcommunity.com was situated in the Bandwidth Barn, a hub for IT innovators in Cape Town, since inception six years ago. It is testimony to the strong growth in the company that we needed to move to bigger premises which have allowed us to brand the offices in our trademark red, as well as offering naming rights on the building. We wish our Cape Town team great success in new building! It's all about media this week with the Vodacom Journalist Awards announced last night in a spectacular production at Vodaworld; and the controversial Magazine Publishers Association of SA PICA awards for magazine and journalism excellence preceded by a two-day magazine publishing conference Tuesday and Wednesday. The Media24 circulation crisis is expected to feature strongly in discussions. The awards are of course lighter with the suspension and withdrawal of the 12 Media24 titles affected.

Have a great week! Louise Marsland, editor@bizcommunity.com. Marketing news: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed on our blog.

    Silver for e.tv at Promax
e.tv's creative services team recently scooped two silver muses at this year's Promax Awards held in Johannesburg. Promax is the international body that recognises marketing and promotional excellence for television broadcasting throughout the world.

SA online market proving its worth
Online usage is showing a steady and healthy growth, according to the latest figures released by the members of the Online Publishers Association (OPA) for the period July, August and September 2007. “Compared to 4.8 million unique users in 2006, the local online fraternity has seen a growth of more than 3 million unique users to 7.8 million unique users in 2007,” says Matthew Buckland, chairman of the OPA. “This is a 163% growth in the SA industry – a growth that shouldn't go unnoticed.”

    Brands ‘fear' their consumers
[Louise Marsland] It's a world where consumers have the power to make or break brands online. It's a world where your consumers know more about your brand than you do – and they are sharing that knowledge with millions of other people around the world. Marketers need to understand the medium of Web 2.0 and change the way they communicate with their consumers. Online creative gurus believe the traditional marketing model is dead.

    What is your brand's narrative?
[Louise Marsland] “Your brand is not your corporate identity. Your brand is the stories, messages, experiences that your consumers have around your brand. Yes, we label it with a logo, but it means very little if there are no stories to back it up.” This is the view of social media expert Mike Stopforth of Cerebra, speaking on online reputation management at the Digital Branding conference by Knowledge Resources in Johannesburg yesterday, Tuesday, 30 October 2007.

Outsourcing allows companies to focus on their core business, and increase competitiveness. It offers a cost-effective solution, especially when companies have insufficient or inexperienced in-house resources available.

Values – live them, don't just advertise them - Actuate
[Grace Harding] Values are the new buzzwords of the business world – all over the country, companies are hanging out values banners, clapping their hands and beating their drums. Well here's a radical thought – stop communicating your company's values to your employees, and do it immediately. It's not working – you're just wasting money.

    2010 FIFA World Cup
‘Uncertainty' around undersea cables ‘damaging' – ISPA
The uncertainty surrounding aspects of the South African Government's position on undersea cables is damaging and threatens to sink the country's hopes for a successful 2010 FIFA World Cup. This is according to the Internet Service Providers' Association of SA (ISPA), which is particularly concerned about the troubling about-turn in the Minister Ivy Matsepe Casaburri's policy regarding the ending of the exclusivity on SAT-3 from November 2007.

Why Bafana Bafana have to rebrand for 2010
[Dr Nikolaus Eberl] Two days after the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup in Paris, President Thabo Mbeki went on air stating that the South African soccer team should consider a name change: “These are young people who carry the national colours, the pride and hopes of the nation. I really think we need to revisit names like that. The nation must feel proud, that we identify with these names. Bafana Bafana cannot have such meaning.”

2010 skills development pressure for media, creative arts
In the run up to the 2010 World Cup, the skills development gap is placing significant pressure on the local film, broadcast and animation industry, media and creative arts school CityVarsity has warned. Contention around tenders – the debate continues
[Lisa Witepski] Requesting an agency to invest time and resources in a free pitch – with no guaranteed outcome – is indefensible, most would agree. But how different is it to invite an agency to participate in a tender? Industry opinion amongst South African graphic designers seems to hold that the distinction is minimal.
