Event management has become quite the science these days, particularly from a safety and security perspective. Those of us who have been on show at various expos and conferences know how important security is with rampant theft at events and exhibitions a fact of life. Most sought after: mainly laptops, cellphones, handbags/wallets and other equipment. Bizcommunity.com had a laptop stolen from our stand at a recent industry trade show at one of Gauteng's upmarket venues. It was our mistake – our promo girls left our stand despite instructions never to leave it unattended – but what was quite unbelievable was the thief's absolute brazen scoping of our stand and the way he lingered to not only pop the laptop in his bag, but to unplug the power cord! All this happened in front of a stand showcasing the latest in security equipment, including cameras... so the whole thing is on video, thanks to Zunaid Ismail of Frank Street CCTV and digital recording solutions (www.frankstreet.co.za). If you know the dubious character featured in this video clip ‘How to steal a laptop in under 73 seconds!' let us know – we'd like our laptop back! And for the rest, please learn from our lesson and secure your equipment at any show or conference and event. Ethics essential for kids marketing
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Research shows that children's purchasing power has been consistently growing over the years, prompting profit-obsessed marketers and advertisers to capitalise – sometimes unethically – on these new trends to ‘feed' these children with all sorts of products. This was revealed last week Friday, 17 August 2007, at the one-day Kids Republic Conference organised by Knowledge Resources in partnership with Egg Marketing & Communications at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

    Black consumers aren't white
[Siyabonga Sibiya] The strong South African economy and the growth of the black middle class have been responsible for many opportunities for South African companies. These opportunities have also seen advertisers caught with the need to attract new black consumers without isolating and losing their traditional white market. Unfortunately most companies are getting caught with their pants down – choosing middle of the road campaigns that fall into the void of untargeted advertising.

MFSA liquidation: board not responsible for anything?
[Chris Moerdyk] With the publication recently of the liquidation accounts of the Marketing Federation of Southern Africa (MFSA) 18 months after it collapsed in a heap of acrimony, questions are still being asked about why the board of directors seems to have been allowed to simply walk away without so much as a backward glance let alone any fiduciary responsibility.

    2010 FIFA World Cup
2010 TV, radio to give Africa unprecedented audience
[Themba Gadebe] The huge number of spectators set to experience the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa on television and radio, will give Africa unprecedented audience.

2010 is media, not soccer, event
The 2010 FIFA World Cup is more than just a soccer event. It is both an opportunity and challenge for Africa, particularly its media, to use the occasion of this world event to counter the wrong perceptions of Africa by projecting the positive image and values of the continent globally. This was said by Ben Egbuna when addressing the second 2010 National Communication Partnership Conference in Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg earlier this week.

Africa must unite, share for 2010
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Communicators from all corners of Africa should forge partnerships, strive to speak with one integrated and coherent voice, and must be acquainted with decisions of the continent's leadership in order to have enough tools to engage their various sectors in preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Dr Makhenkesi Stofile, the South African minister of sport and recreation, said yesterday, Wednesday, 15 August 2007, at the opening of the 2010 National Communication Partnership Conference at Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.

    New host city names approved
Following engagement and consultation with the cities, the board of directors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa (OC) and FIFA last week agreed that the name changes proposed by various host cities may be used within South Africa, while outside of the country a combination of both the old and new names will be used.

Communication alignment on agenda for African communicators

    The swearword in advertising

[Gino Cosme] Facebook is becoming one of the most talked-about social networks and web phenomena of the year. Helen Zille, Cape Town mayor and leader of the Democratic Alliance, has stolen a march and adopted some of the groundbreaking Web 2.0 communication technologies used in that race for her own office, including the newly launched blog on Capeinfo.co.za. And with adspend having rocketed from R9 billion only a few years ago to more than R20 billion today, it's not surprising that demand for peak time advertising is outstripping supply.
