UNICEF honours 12 Malawian journalists
The 12 journalists from both the print and electronic media emerged victorious after entering their articles into a competition which UNICEF organised in collaboration with the National Media Institute of Southern Africa (NAMISA).
Journalists from the Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL) Theresa Kasawala who scooped the Emergency and Disaster Communication Award and Karen Iron Msiska who came third in the PMTCT Awards were amongst the 12.
Tiwonge Ng'ona of The Guardian Newspapers Limited came first in the PMTCT award.
In the electronic media, the first prize went to Temwani Mhango who works for a catholic church-owned community Radio Tigabane in the Emergency and Disaster Award while Mwai Mtumodzi of Radio Islam got the electronic media award in the PMTCT sector.
Malawi's Director of Information Nelson Magombo said the media need to focus on these important issues while Malawi's UNICEF resident representative Carrie Auer observed that a vibrant and proactive media is what Malawi wants in the implementation of PMTCT and reduction of risk disasters.
