Ugandan movie to premiere in Wandegeya

The Ugandan film industry keeps getting stronger by the day and its latest addition is David Maloba. At 22, Maloba is set to make history come Thursday, 9 August 2012, by becoming the first Ugandan to officially premiere a short film.

The premiere will take place at Wandegeya-based Nile Bar and Restaurant in Kampala. And for his debut film, Maloba has proven he has more than enough potential to give the likes of Mariam Ndagire a run for their money.

His 40-minute drama, titled Oddly Fine Friends, is an ingenious tale of friendship and betrayal. Maloba, who wrote, starred and directed the short film, uses impeccable humour and emotion to tell just how far a world of great friends can fall apart after a simple discovery. The social issue of sexual promiscuity is the recurrent theme that will keep you hooked.

"We had originally intended to make a feature film but after the second day of filming, we realised that our finances couldn't go the distance," Maloba explains his choice of a short film.

Maloba's story is no different from that of most local filmmakers. He said shortage of finances saw him shoot the film without proper equipment. But what a great film he came out with.

How this budding talented filmmaker managed to work with a small inexperienced cast to produce one of the best films to ever come out of Uganda, which makes him special. Oddly Fine Friends is simply a must watch.
