New CEO for Media24 Newspapers

Abraham van Zyl has been appointed the new CEO of Media24's newspaper publishing division, effective 1 July, the board of directors announced late last week. Van Zyl, who currently heads up the daily newspaper division, has recently returned from Beijing, China, where he was responsible for the establishment of Naspers' international print media interests, including those in India and Russia.

According to Hein Brand, Media24's chief executive officer, Van Zyl brings along a wealth of experience with his strong editorial and management background in the newspaper environment. “Abraham is a solid newspaper man who has also distinguished himself as an outstanding business manager,” said Brand.

“I am looking forward to growing our newspapers' presence in the digital environment while at the same time further developing and growing our printed products and our position in the emerging market sectors,” commented Van Zyl on his appointment.

Van Zyl's experience includes that of GM of City Press before its amalgamation into RCP Media and regional general manager of Media24's southern newspaper division.

Van Zyl will replace Francois Groepe who, in turn, is taking over from Hein Brand, as CEO for Media24 effective 1 July. Brand will be based in São Paulo, where he will be responsible for growing Naspers' print and Internet businesses in South America.
