New health eatery chain in SA

The newly launched Osumo, meaning 'the juice' in Portuguese, is a healthy juice bar concept focusing on the educated urban dweller in search of an all-rounded lifestyle. It aims to provide health-conscious consumers with nutritious, functional foods that complement and promote a well-balanced way of life.

Along with business partners Mae Dutton and Verna Tardew, the Osumo brand is the brain-child of Megan Hussey.

"Our mission at Osumo is to increase the awareness of the benefits of a well-balanced lifestyle by offering a healthy and functional alternative to fast food. The Osumo team is passionate in offering fresh, nutritious and energy-giving food delivered in a convenient and hygienic environment to the cosmopolitan market," explains Hussey.

The first branch to open was Canal Walk. Greenmarket Square launches on 1 October 2006 and Sea Point on 1 March 2007. Branches in Johannesburg will open in late 2007.

Menu

The low fat menu is simple with a 'going back to basics' philosophy and includes a variety of 'made to order' take-out or eat-in items.

Breakfast menu items include Easy Oats, Eggs on Toast, Fruit Salad, a choice of Frittata and a PBJ (Black Cat peanut butter on toast with sliced banana and honey). Salads, sandwiches and wraps are available with fillings such as Sticky Plum Chicken, Osumo Tuna, Butternut and Feta, and Smoked Salmon. Plain or toasted sandwiches are prepared with whole wheat, rye or white breads. Low fat, low GI and high fibre wraps are also available.

Delicious beverage items include a Mango Mantaray smoothie (tropical juice, mango, sorbet and frozen yoghurt) and a Lemon Lockstar fruit crush (orange juice, fresh lemon, mint and sorbet).

Boosters such as Anti-oxidants, Power Plus, Defense Liver and Memory Plus can be added to smoothies, crushes and freshly squeezed juice. Super Sumo juice blends including Live Long, Healthy Heart and Sweet Green, with wheat grass are also on the cards.
