"When locals and visitors eat out in Cape Town they want a guide to the best places to eat and not just fine dining spots and that is why we have started these awards," explains Clare Mack, food writer; editor of www.spill.co.za, an online publication for food reviewing, and organiser of the event.
"Cape Town's food and wine culture plays a vital role in the city's tourism offering. We are delighted that both the up-market establishments and the smaller, more casual and informal eateries are being judged and recommended in the inaugural awards," adds CEO of Cape Town Tourism, Mariette du Toit-Helmbold.
Headed up by Mack, the judging panel featured a line-up of foodies including Anna Trapido, a food judge on numerous food panels and food writer; Jos Baker, South African food writers, a judge on the San Pellegrino Awards panel and an associate editor of Platter's Wine Guide; and Bianca Coleman, Cape Town based food critic and journalist.
