Tourism Radio goes mobile

Tourism Radio, the location-based service for international visitors, has signed a partnership deal with Vodacom to allow access to the latter's wireless network. Using a hook-up between the GPS system and Vodacom's MMC technology, the system broadcasts directly from the vehicle in which the visitors are travelling.

Says Tourism Radio director Mark Allewell, "All of us here at Tourism Radio are very proud of how far we have come, and look forward to expanding our coverage over the whole of South Africa, ensuring that wherever they are, tourists will be able to learn more about this incredible country."

With investors such as Paul Simon, Tourism Radio is the first service of its kind in the world, and was developed locally in Cape Town with support from the University of Cape Town. Despite only going live three months ago, it has already secured advertising from the likes of Pick 'n Pay, Uwe Koetter, and the V&A Waterfront.

"Vodacom is proud to be associated with Tourism Radio and this exciting new venture. We are always on the lookout for out-of-the-box, innovative and new business ideas," says Mthobi Tyamzashe, Vodacom's executive director of Corporate Affairs.

"Vodacom is a proudly South African company and we are delighted to be able to bring the history and wealth of our country to tourists who are visiting us."
