Kevin Savage new MPowerFM GM

Broadcasting legend Kevin Savage has been appointed GM of MPowerFM, effective 1 February 2009, the independent Mpumalanga radio station announced on Friday 6 February. Savage replaces founding GM Bondo Ntuli, who resigned in December 2008 to reportedly pursue a private business opportunity in Mpumalanga's entertainment industry.

Announcing his successor, MPowerFM chairman Mark Schormann said Savage's 30 years of radio experience will enable the station to build on the solid foundations laid by Ntuli during its first year of operation.

“Kevin brings a fresh approach and new industry insight that will help MPowerFM capitalise on its tremendous growth to date, and will help the station consolidate itself as the preferred sound of Mpumalanga,” he added.

Savage described his move to MPowerFM's studios in the province's capital, Nelspruit, as a chance in a lifetime. “When Capitol Radio started in 1979, I was part of the launch team. Joining MPowerFM as it is poised for its next growth phase gives me the same excitement. It's the chance of a lifetime and I'm looking forward to the challenge of joining a relatively new but dynamic team at MPowerFM,” remarked Savage.

Savage's broadcasting pedigree stretches back 30 years, to his hometown of London and then Canada in the '70s, before he arrived in South Africa in 1979.

Since then, he has been a constant voice on iconic stations such as Capital 604 and 702. Savage is perhaps best known for his slot on 5FM, where he presented the lunchtime show for a decade - and where he established the “Music Power Half Hour” request show that still exists in a slightly different guise.

In the late '90s he served as programme director at KFM in Cape Town, and has more recently worked as a voiceover artist contributing to the TV entertainment show Top Billing, as well as presenting the weekend breakfast shows on OFM.

“Kevin's wealth of experience, from presenting to management, plus his first-hand experience in establishing stations of a similar size, are what make him such a good match for MPowerFM,” concluded Schormann.
