SABC's prodigal son returns

Xolani Gwala has made a U-turn to rejoin the national broadcaster at Auckland Park as a presenter of SAfm's flagship morning programme AM Live. He returned on to the airwaves yesterday, Monday, 6 October 2008.

Gwala presented SABC1's current affairs programme Asikhulume and hosted the SAfm mid-morning show, before leaving the SABC to work for the Middle Eastern-based RAM FM in January 2008. After the closure of the station in August this year, he returned to South Africa.

According to a press release, Gwala will be presenting AM Live for a month, before moving to the afternoon drive's PM Live on the station. He will also be going back to host Asikhulume as from mid-October.

“Despite receiving offers from a number of media outlets I decided to return to the SABC. It offers unparalleled opportunities, and is an exciting environment in which to operate. I also signed up with the SABC because of my commitment to the ethos of public broadcasting,” said Gwala.

“I was based in the Palestinian territory, in Ramallah, and as a journalist and broadcaster, I learnt so much while there. I will apply these lessons to my work in South Africa. I really feel as though I have come home and I am looking forward to broadcasting to the nation and having an opportunity to touch the lives of millions of South Africans.”
