Safmarine to merge with Maersk

Safmarine has merged its operations and corporate management into Maersk in a move that will probably result in 240 jobs being lost and will lead to the closure of Safmarine's head office in Antwerp, according to an article published by The Economic Times and The Journal of Commerce.

Safmarine's regional offices and management in Cape Town, Dubai, Shanghai and Mumbai will be closed although the South African branch offices will remain in operation. Maersk Line chief executive Eivind Kolding says that the internal support and management functions of Safmarine will be integrated into Maersk.

The Journal of Commerce says Safmarine chief executive Tomas Dyrbye will leave the company. It says the merger will not affect Safmarine's multi-purpose shipping operations.
