Ya Rona shaft: closed on section 54 order until further notice

According to Business Day, the world's fourth-largest gold producer, Gold Fields, has reopened its largest source of gold production at the West section of its Kloof Driefontein complex, near Westonaria, where five people died from smoke inhalation during an underground fire on June 30.

The mine's East section had already been reopened last week. Kloof Driefontein is one of three Gold Fields mining operations in South Africa. It produced 1,1-million ounces of gold last year, making it the company's largest mining operation, Business Day says.

4-traders.com news portal reports that the first full shift went down with the morning shift, following the re-opening of KDC East on Tuesday last week. The Ya Rona Shaft, which remains subject to a Section 54 Order issued by the Department of Mineral Resources, will stay closed until further notice. The fire at the Ya Rona Shaft has not yet been extinguished and proto teams continue to attend the scene.
