Business school still on global MBA ratings

The University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business is once again the only African business school to feature in the prestigious annual Financial Times global MBA rankings.

The full-time MBA programme was ranked 74th out of 100 schools.

The school, which is the only African business school to feature in the rankings, was also marked out as offering the second best value-for-money MBA in the world. This is the ninth consecutive year that it has been listed in what is widely considered to be the premier ranking of business schools.

The director of the school, Professor Walter Baets, says the school is proud to be ranked yet again: "The FT rankings, as a recognition of quality, have important implications for all customers of the business school; students and companies want to know that the business school they select has international recognition."

Baets believes it is important for the school's MBA to remain competitively priced for the high quality it delivers and so is gratified that it is rated as the second-best value-for-money MBA in the world.

Though the school's position in the rankings has dropped by 20 points this year, Baets says the difference between the business schools in the top 100, with the exception of the first 20 or 25, is extremely small.

UCT GSB also makes it into QS rankings

UCT's Graduate School of Business has also been ranked top in Africa and the Middle East in the latest QS Global 200 ranking.

"The MBA, our most enduring course, is becoming more and more attractive," says Baets, "particularly to foreign students, for management education as well as a resource pool for management talent. There is no substitute for actually being in an emerging market to help students understand them, their challenges of complexity and inequality, and for building thought leadership and business practice in ways that are contextually relevant."

QS Global 200 Business Schools Report ratings are based on details provided by over 3,300 employers who actively recruit MBA graduates. The objective is to provide a resource to help prospective MBA students identify the business schools from which employers most actively recruit, and is used by MBA employers, prospective MBA students and institutions worldwide interested in international business education and recruitment trends.

The survey was conducted between March and July 2012 and represents one of the largest exercises QS has undertaken in terms of geographic scope and level of detail.

The list of 200 business schools, from which employers prefer to recruit MBAs, was compiled from details provided by HR and line managers who recruit at companies around the world.
