Hilarious Hangmen is the Royal Court Theatre's first collaboration with NT Live

Theatre buffs are in for a real treat with the screening of the Royal Court Theatre production of Martin McDonagh's sensational Hangmen at Cinema Nouveau. It is one of the best plays you will ever see and showcases the art, allure and craft of theatre at its best.

Written by Olivier and Academy Award-winner Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, The Cripple of Inishmaan), and with an all-star cast, the big-screen version of this hit new comedy follows a sell-out run at the Royal Court Theatre, and acclaimed West End transfer, with a cast including David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Andy Nyman (Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and Johnny Flynn (Clouds of Sils Maria).

Produced by Robert Fox and Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions and Royal Court Theatre Productions, Hangmen is the Royal Court Theatre’s first collaboration with NT Live and was filmed at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre by NT Live for screening in cinemas around the globe, including at Cinema Nouveau theatres in South Africa.

The story is set in a small pub in Oldham, where Harry (David Morrissey) is something of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and sycophantic pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn) lurk with very different motives for their visit. And when Mooney reveals his true nature, hell erupts with hilarious results.

Dark and delightful

If you enjoy dark comedy with bite, Hangmen offers delightful entertainment with some amusing twists. There’s also an insightful short that takes a look at 20 years of The Royal Court’s history and the relevance of its plays.

Winner of two Olivier Awards for Best New Play and Best Set Design earlier this month, Hangemn is directed by Matthew Dunster with stunning set design by Anna Fleischle, lighting design by Joshua Carr and sound design by Ian Dickinson for Autograph.
If you want to see this masterful production, there are only two screenings left on 13 and 14 April at Cinema Nouveau theatres in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. The running time of this production is two hours and 40 mins, including a 20 min interval.

Launched in 2009, National Theatre Live enables audiences to experience the best of British theatre throughout the year, as the National brings cameras into the auditorium to record and broadcast performances from stage to screen. National Theatre Live broadcasts have been seen by an audience of over 4 million people at 2,000 venues in 50 countries.
