Cape Town rockers turn DJs

On Friday 9 April 2010, 11 musicians from a selection of Cape Town's most popular bands of recent memory will be digging out their LPs and playing a selection of their favourite music, from Led Zeppelin to Beethoven, at Cape Town's Mercury Live.

With Jeremy De Tolly (The Dirty Skirts), George Bacon (Hog Hoggidy Hog), Sean Ou Tim (Lark), Sasha Righini (The Plastics), Francois Breytenbach Blom (V.O.D / K.O.B.U.S), Johnny Tex (The Revelators), Raoul Goetze (Black River, Damn Right), Nic Roos (The Sleepers), Joshua Grierson, Natalie Lucia (Red Light In June) and Lonesome Dave Ferguson rocking up to rock the crowd with their musical selections at Mercury Live & Lounge (both downstairs in the Lounge and upstairs on the Main Stage), patrons can expect nothing short of a unique and “moving” experience at the hands of bands.

Each of the “DJs” (or ‘selectors', if you prefer, since none of them will claim to being actual proper ‘DJs', ever having operated anything more complex than the hi-fi at home for a few friends ) on the night will have up to an hour to play the songs they love best, and in no particular order.

Formats will be vinyl record, 7”, 12”, MP3 and CD.

Live band

There will also be a live band on stage, When Karma Sleeps, at some point in the evening, but that's just for the sake of tradition. Before, and after - the music of the musicians will rule!

The idea behind the show is to showcase musicians as the music fans they themselves most definitely are. Under the banner of a new Cape Town creative collective called I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend, the idea is also to have this show present itself within the line-up of the nation's music festivals and club circuits, where the option is not to have to listen to the same old floor-bangers and crowd-pleasers that people are used to hearing the so-called regular festival and party “DJs” play.

It is really about challenging what people “expect” to hear at a DJ night versus what kind of music they might actually like to hear - as interpreted by names and faces they already love and in most cases, know that they can trust - musically!

Monthly series of events

This is the first of an ongoing and monthly series of events featuring band members playing the music they love, for the simple love of the music.

Set lists will be posted online at the I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend facebook group after the event.

Entrance to Mercury Live is R30.

Doors open at 8pm. Musicians as DJs downstairs from 8pm until 11pm, and then upstairs from 10pm until close.
