Staaldraad song, theme for movie
The Afrikaans rock group Staaldraad will be making its debut into movies as its song has been chosen as the theme tune for the new romantic comedy Karate Kallie - Die Hele Movie.
The theme song for Karate Kallie - Die Hele Movie was not only performed by the group, it was written by lead vocalist John Tinke and bass player Aydhn Henry, and produced by lead guitarist Gideon Rademeyer.
With Dean Crichton on drums, the group also wrote, scored and performed many of the original tracks written for the movie soundtrack. Karate Kallie is being released in cinemas by Ster-Kinekor Distribution on 18 September and the film will be available on DVD from Ster-Kinekor Home Entertainment in December.
Different genres of music
“Being involved with Karate Kallie was a huge challenge for us because we had to push ourselves into different genres of music we are not used to. But it was also great fun,” said Tinke.
The band believes the Karate Kallie theme song has the potential to be released as a single - although no definite plans are in place for this yet. However, it will be available in digital formats such as the Web for download in the not too distant future.
“All the guys love performing the song. It's always a great hit at our shows, so it will also definitely have a place on our next album,” Tinke added.
Spin-off
Directed by Wimpie van der Merwe, Karate Kallie - Die Hele Movie is a spin-off of the short film, which has developed something of a cult following from its frequent airings on M-Net since 2007. The short film also received numerous awards at film festivals and has spread as far as the DRC, Tanzania and Afghanistan.
It's a true Afrikaans comedy speaking to a broad audience with many “aah” and “ag shame” moments for the romantics, and tons of action to keep everyone else happy.
