Joburg Promusica Theatre programme, September 2009
The Johannesburg Promusica Theatre has released its programme for September 2009, which includes the Opera Barbie, and two different concerts catering to varied musical tastes.
Soprano, Linda van Coppenhagen
Opera Barbie
Soprano Linda van Coppenhagen and baritone Douwe Bijkersma are performing a powerful cocktail of opera, operetta and lieder solos and duets at Pro Musica's intimate new Basement Theatre on 13 September 2009.
The first half of the programme will be a traditional classical concert-style performance with solos and duets by Linda and Douwe accompanied by Dennis Stander on the piano. The second half of the programme will take on a somewhat experimental form and is aptly titled Introducing the Opera Barbie.
Linda van Coppenhagen, a lyrical soprano with sound coloratura abilities, will be performing some of the arias typically sung by what she labels as "The Barbies of opera". The concept of Barbie - a pretty, popular and well-dressed doll - is combined with the somewhat flamboyant personality of the characters in operas who classically embody this physical description. Audience members can look forward to the amusing performance of flashy arias from La Traviata, Die Fledermaus and Don Pasquale. Douwe handsomely takes on the role of Barbie's "Ken".
Date: 13 September 2009 at 3pm
Tickets: R75 (available from the theatre)
Spring Concert
On 11th and 12 September the Promusica Vocal Tuition will be having its spring concert at the Basement theatre. The idea behind the concerts is to showcase the work that both tutors and learners have done since the inception of the vocal tuition scheme. The concert will feature music from the school choirs' competition, which the kids took part in, as well as a series of African folk songs, afro jazz, and light classical music.
The second event is on 19 September, which will be hosted by the Gauteng Chamber Choir. This is the choir's first concert at the theatre. This concert will be classical and will feature operatic pieces, choruses, arias and small ensembles from different composers.
Date: 11, 12 and 19 September 2009
Tickets: R50 (available from the theatre)
