Durban Dance Festival develops the arts
"Dance Movement" received a grant through the Arts & Culture Trust's Development Programme, and will use the funding to further its objectives of offering disadvantaged youth, aspiring dancers and artists from KwaZulu-Natal a platform to professionally develop their dancing and artistic skills.
The festival is a celebration of the best dance-works and performances in hip hop, contemporary, jazz and ballet. Each masterpiece has been professionally choreographed and involves community-based artists, dancers, youth groups, and other artistic stakeholders from the KwaZulu-Natal region.
"Despite the challenging environment that we are in, we continue to develop, promote and sustain dance in South Africa, thereby creating jobs for our artists," said festival director and choreographer, Jarryd Watson. "Dance Movement is reaching an absolute milestone!" he added.
The festival supports audience development by encouraging Durban residences to attend dance and theatre festivals which simultaneously give artists the opportunity to explore and showcase their creativity, while also creating jobs and sustainability for dance and theatre in the area.
