London's action polo comes to the highveld
As the host, the Queen Mother of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, Dr Semane Molotlegi, will be joined by society guests from across the continent and internationally as the stars come out to play.
Much like Twenty20 cricket attracted new fans to the game, so has action polo. The Queen Mother's Charity Cup will be played to new adapted rules, which make the game much faster and more exciting. Matches of three players a side are played on a smaller grass fields that are fully boarded all round.
Making up the invitational teams of star-studded polo players are: the only semi-professional, and highest ranked black South Africa polo player, Sbu Duma; the youngest South African international player, Dirk van Reenen, who is just 15 years old; plus three highly ranked players from the same family.
Three-a-side curtain raiser
Game one, the curtain raiser is a three-a-side match featuring two international women who have represented both South Africa and Zimbabwe, playing alongside top male internationals, including Kenyan Casamir Gross.
The main game features six highly handicapped young international South African players, many of whom play in England and are not often seen locally.
Commenting on the inaugural event, Princess Tirelo Molotlegi of the Royal Bafokeng said: "This is the first time that we are seeing action polo in the North West, and it features some of the finest players - both the current and the future stars - of the game. We are honoured to be hosting this at the Royal Marang Hotel and privileged that by doing so we will be able to raise funds for much needy charities."
