Absa Premiership Player & Coach of the Month announced for February

The clock is ticking and the pressure is mounting as the Absa Premiership 2008/2009 season reaches a climax. There's just over one month to go before the curtain falls on what can only be described as a season filled with thrills and spills at every kick-off.

There were seven nominations for Absa Premiership Player of the month for February and the spotlight fell on a Calvin Marlin who proved to have just what it takes to win the admiration and grand nod of approval from the panel of judges. Others in the running were Elias Pelembe (Supersport Utd) and Surprise Moriri (Mamelodi Sundowns).

Absa Sponsorship Consultant in charge of managing the Absa Premiership, Steward Masela said “I really enjoy being part of the Absa premiership where I have been given the opportunity to reward all the hard work that the players and coach put in every week.”
February's player of the month comes as no surprise for all Sundowns fans who witnessed Moriri's hat-trick against Maritzburg United. With 6 goals added to his name last month, Moriri has offered his team a lifeline on more than one occasion.

Moriri was unable to attend today's press conference as he was returning from Mauritius where he did duty for the Brazilians in their CAF Confederations Cup match on Sunday.

As far as the Absa Coach of the Month goes, Clive Barker stood head and shoulders above his peers. With a limited squad his team was still rated the most consistent in February with only one loss, two away draws against Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs and two wins against neighbours Thanda Royal Zulu and the leaders of the log SuperSport Utd.

Coach Henri Michel earned himself a second spot and was commended for steering his team to the number two position at the end of February.

“Absa congratulates both Surprise Moriri and Clive Barker on their great achievements. Both are worthy winners in their respective categories,” concluded Masela.

“It's been a tough season to date, but I must really commend the players and coaches for always trying their best and bringing out the best in themselves,” said PSL CEO, Kjetil Siem.

“We in for another exciting conclusion to the season and these awards also creates excitement,” Siem added.
