Cape's New Year Carnival enters new era

The Kaapse Karnaval Association has been formed to consolidate the management of the Cape New Year Carnival. The organisation was formed in early May 2004 but the association decided to prove its worth first by conceptualising and organising an outstanding event with the help of Adrenalin Productions, the event organisers for the next three years, before exposing all the exciting plans for the upcoming festive season.

Formerly known as the New Year Carnival for the past two years it was decided out of an urgent need to consolidate the three different participating boards to form the Kaapse Karnaval Association, consisting of seven affiliates.

Cape Minstrel Boards:
- Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association
- Cape Community Minstrel Board

Malay Choir Board:

- Cape Malay Choir Board
- Suid Afrikaanse Koorraad
- Tafelberg Manne Koorraad

Christmas Band Board:

- South African United Christmas Bands'Board
- Western Province Christmas Choir Board

Over the past 100 years the event has evolved from mere troupes of choirs singing Christmas Carols and ushering in the New Year in Cape Town, into the biggest happening on the South African event Calendar, with 5% of the local population actively involved in the event.

The event kicks off on the 19th December 2004 with the first road march to the Grand Parade all the way through to the 19th March 2005 with the final competition at the Good Hope Centre. The mega event covers three major road marches, The Minstrel Troup Competition and the Malay Choir Board Competition over the entire period. The new look carnival has been conceptualised with events like the Rio, Nottinghill and New Orleans Carnivals in mind and is going to be a magnificent experience for all involved.

The routes and the stadium will have live to air big screens ensuring that everyone has a good opportunity to witness the proceedings. This also presents outstanding branding and sponsorship opportunities to assist with subsidising aspects of the costs of staging the event. The theme of this year's carnival is a celebration of our 10 years as a democracy.

The Kaapse Karnaval Association has weekly meetings and invites all those interested to attend on Thursday mornings at 11h00 in the boardroom on the first floor in the City Hall.
