Cape Town Homemakers Expo launches pet design category

The Cape Town Homemakers Expo has launched a competition ideal for animal-loving designers. In association with Hill's Pet Nutrition and Domestic Animal Rescue Group (Darg), the Design, Art and Textile Design ComPETition aims to help less-fortunate pets and will award the winning local designers with over R50,000 in prize money.

The 24th Cape Town Homemakers Expo will take place from 29 August to 1 September 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The Design ComPETition is all about bespoke pet furniture such as designer beds, cat perches, multi-functional furniture and flat-packs for pet travel. In the Art ComPETition, artists and designers will be given a basic wooden bed to create a one-of-a-kind design using paint, mosaic, collage, metal, pewter or any other art medium. The Textile Design ComPETtition will have fabric designers create gorgeous pet-themed prints. The top 15 finalists in each category will be on display for the duration of the Cape Town Homemakers Expo.

“We’re so excited to add another element to the expo this year, that’s our pet design category,” says Sandy Edwards, Cape Town Homemakers Expo organiser. “It’s only fitting that our furry companions should have their own category as they’re such a big part of our homes already. Why not let them do it in style? Being able to help those pets less-fortunate than our own and giving back to an organisation like Darg is just the cherry on top.”

Judged by an independent panel, the winners in each of the three categories will walk away with a cash prize of R10,000, second place will receive R5,000 and third place will receive R3,000 – totalling R54,000 in prize money. Expo visitors will be invited to bid on their favourite design or artwork for their furry friend, with funds raised going to Darg.

The closing date for competition entries is Friday, 14 June 2019 and successful entrants will be notified telephonically or in writing. Visit for more details on how to enter.
