Reality-style golfing competition

Now in its second year, Johnnie Walker and Golf Digest have once again teamed up in search of 2007 Johnnie Walker Golf Digest Striding Man, a golfer who demonstrates determination, optimism, courage, resourcefulness, creative thinking, pioneering spirit and contribution to the game of golf. The reality-style competition will be filmed and shown on Super Sport, where the public will vote for their winner by SMS.

The Striding Man is not only a keen golfer but someone who is a family man, a business man and an overall achiever. Readers can nominate friends and family and eight finalists will be selected for their inspirational account of personal progress and how golf has played a part in their journey. Entries close on 20 May 2007 and the eight finalists will be revealed in the July issue of Golf Digest available in June.

The eight finalists will win an all-expenses paid trip to Pezula Resort Hotel and Spa in Knysna where they will be required to demonstrate their character, personality, style and golfing skill on and off the championship course. The grand prize? A once-in-a-lifetime all expenses paid trip for two to the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic.

25 toughest courses in SA

The May issue of Golf Digest, available since Wednesday, 25 April 2007, features 25 of the most challenging courses to play in SA. Remarks Barry Havenga, assistant editor of Golf Digest, “Everyone has a certain hole or even a certain course that they tend to struggle on, so we decided to list the ones that have ruined our scorecards in the past.”

The top position goes to The Links at Fancourt which “has already brought the cream of the Sunshine Tour to its knees,” according to the magazine. A close second is St Francis Links, which fits the description by the late Jim Murray: “You need a camel, a canoe, a priest and a tourniquet to get through it.”

Golf Digest and a panel of over 100 evaluation members went out to examine the layouts that have battered and bruised golfers and tested their skill, ability and nerves till the very end. The conclusion is a list of 25 courses that have tested even the seasoned tour professionals.

In addition to the 25 toughest courses, Golf Digest has examined the toughest holes and has created the monstrous Frankenstein 18 which would challenge even the greatest golfers on the tour.
