Regular Popular Mechanics contributor Jennifer Stastny took first place in the Medical Solutions category for her article on iThemba Labs, a cancer treatment facility near Stellenbosch. She also won the overall award, which includes a trip to Germany.

Two other Popular Mechanics writers, deputy editor Anthony Doman and freelancer Gillian Warren-Brown, won merit awards in the same category.

The magazine’s editor and publisher, Alan Duggan, won the research and development section for his article on SumbandilaSat, the South African-built satellite that is due to be launched into low-Earth orbit later this year.

Stastny, Doman and Duggan were also category winners in last year’s competition, Doman taking the top award for an article titled “Here Comes the Sun”, which first revealed the breakthrough work on solar panels by Professor Vivian Alberts of Johannesburg University.
