Be a manly man
Manwees, the first mainstream Afrikaans men's magazine has hit the shelves. Wilhelm du Plessis, formerly De Kat editor, will edit the magazine and is joint-publisher with Mike de Villiers, formerly of SA Flyer. The first issue, with Heinz Winckler and his fiancé, Aletté de Klerk on the cover, is a 164 pager and the print run for it was 30 000.
"South Africa has needed a magazine that fulfills the needs of Afrikaans men between the ages of 25 and 45 for quite some time," says Du Plessis. "Manwees is a high quality general lifestyle magazine for Afrikaans men that will focus on fashion, health, inspiration, leisure, money, relationships and sex.
"We believe that it is a relevant publication - Afrikaans men have long been overseen and therefore we want to offer them a quality product that will keep them informed, entertained and enthralled."
"The language in the magazine will be a reflection of how Afrikaans is used today - that does not necessarily mean it will be slangy, but we won't disregard the effect other languages have on it," Du Plessis concludes.
