Pick n Pay contributes towards Pink Drive

The Pink Drive became one of South Africa's largest breast cancer awareness drives - an initiative that started in October 2011 when a group of women dressed in pink set off for a 5km walk. This effort resulted in Pick n Pay last week handing over an incredible R800,000 towards to the Pink Drive.

"Over the past two years women around the country have participated in Pick n Pay's Women's Walks in a bid to help raise money and awareness for the Pink Drive, an organisation that provides free breast cancer awareness and screening to women who would otherwise not have access to such facilities," said Malcolm Mycroft, general manager of Marketing at Pick n Pay.

"They've supported these events with such enthusiasm that next year we have 18 walks planned for all around the country, when in year one, we started out with only ten. Our heartfelt thanks go out to every single woman who took part in these events over the past two years - without their support we could have never reached this milestone."

Free screenings

The Women's Walks have taken place in all the major centres around South Africa. Thousands of women, children - and even men - have come together proudly wearing pink for the 5km walk in support of breast cancer awareness. The Pink Trucks are present at the walks and women are able to have free breast screenings, as well as have their cholesterol and blood pressure checked - completely free of charge by nurses from local Pick n Pay pharmacies who are out in full force at these events.

"We are looking forward to seeing as many of our customers out there as possible in 2014," said Mycroft. "We understand that it may not always be possible to participate in the walk, but customers are also able to contribute by switching their shopper points at the kiosks provided in-store and donating them to the Pink Drive."
