Chefs hatch plan for giant Easter egg
Port Elizabeth is in for a giant Easter treat when chefs at the Boardwalk's Kipling's Brasserie attempt to make what they believe will be the biggest chocolate Easter egg the city has seen.
The giant egg will be an estimated 2m high and 1.5m wide and will use around a delectable 125kg of chocolate.
Although it is a fraction the size of the world's largest Easter egg - made in Italy and 10.3m high - creating the Bay egg will still be a considerable feat.
The team will start working on the egg a week before Easter using a mould created by Port Elizabeth-based Xtreme Styrene Products.
The edible piece of chocolate art will be on display at Kipling's over the Easter weekend. It will later be donated to a local children's charity.
"We are doing things a little differently this year," Boardwalk food and beverage marketing coordinator Megan Capoto said.
"Instead of buying chocolate eggs to donate to charities, we will be attempting to create what we believe to be the biggest chocolate egg Port Elizabeth has seen. Making this giant egg is going to be a considerable feat and we can't wait to put it on display.
"We encourage our community to come down and see the giant egg in all its glory over the Easter weekend."
The chefs say the trickiest part will be moving the egg from the cold room to the display area due to its size.
In addition to displaying the egg, Kipling's Brasserie will also be hosting a special Easter lunch on Sunday 5 April featuring an Easter egg hunt.
