Second garden in Soweto from McCain

The McCain Passion Patch project, designed to encourage school learners, particularly grade six pupils, to grow and maintain their own vegetable garden has been so successful at the JS Mpanza Primary School in Soweto, that it will open a second garden at the Ekuthuleni Combined School in Soweto.

The planting of vegetables gardens has encouraged a new interest for the outdoors amongst pupils, added something new to their regular school routines, encouraged teamwork, patience and the reward of hard work. The knowledge imparted through the project will aid learners in growing their own gardens outside of school, which can provide food for their families and the community at large.

"We are thrilled to be increasing our contribution in Soweto and at the same time encouraging pupils to supplement their diet with healthy, nutritious vegetables. As part of our CSI drive, we hope to continue planting more Passion Patches in communities in need. We believe that these gardens will assist in developing sustainable long term food solutions," said Helen de Chalain, marketing director of McCain Foods.
