Pirated movies and games worth millions destroyed
The discs were seized during raids by various units of the SAPS, Customs and inspectors of the Department of Trade and Industry during 2007 following complaints laid by SAFACT.
The value of the product to the criminals involved in the pirating of films and games is estimated at over R4 million and represents losses in potential sales to legitimate businesses in the distribution, retail, rental and cinema industry estimated at R12 million.
The 8 tons of product took two days to process through the crushing machines under police and SAFACT supervision.
SAFACT CEO, James Lennox, estimated that in excess of 30 tons of seized pirated films and games presently stored in Counterfeit Goods depots around the country will be destroyed during 2008.
