Understanding the Consumer Protection Bill

When the Consumer Protection Bill becomes law it will not only boost the rights of consumers but will have a significant impact on the way traders, retailers and suppliers can do business.

Traders, retailers and suppliers wanting to know more about the implications of the Bill can attend a workshop, on 28 September 2007, which will explain the obligations of those providing services and products to consumers.

The workshop will take place at the University of Cape Town's law faculty and will be hosted by Professor Angela Itzikowitz, a professor in Banking and Financial Markets Law at the University of the Witwatersrand.

It will investigate and analyse the ramifications of the Bill for companies operating in South Africa. It will consider consumer rights, who is protected by the Bill, any transactions exempt from the operation of the Bill, fair business practice and how it is promoted.

The course will also deal with how the watchdog of Consumer Affairs, the National Consumer Protection Commission, will operate.

Itzikowitz specialises in the field of finance and regulatory reform. She sits on various boards and committees including the Financial Services Ombud Schemes Council and she is a member of the Association of Banking Lawyers of Southern Africa.
