The 2010 competition was judged blind by a panel of five that for the first time included two international judges, Hervé Dantan, chef de cave of Champagne Mailly Grand Cru, and Nicolas Follet of Oenosense Consulting based in Riems, France.

The Robertson winery Bon Courage took top honours at the event for the Jacques Bruére Blanc de Blancs 2007.

Attracting international interest

"The excellence of South Africa's Méthode Cap Classique category is attracting international interest from wine judges and consumers alike," continued Sa. "In the nine years the company has sponsored this event, we have witnessed a marked improvement in overall quality, as well as the emergence of many exciting new producers in the category.

"Our involvement has allowed us to be at the forefront of arguably South Africa's most exciting wine category in terms of the local market and it makes good marketing sense for us to be associated with an event of this nature."

Portugal-based Amorim Cork is the leading supplier of wine and champagne stoppers globally.
