Playing with words for a brighter future
In keeping with this tradition, the centre recently announced the launch of a social development campaign called Wordplay - a new literacy campaign for primary school learners in the Mitchells Plain area. The Wordplay: Literacy for Liberty competition is based on the popular American spelling bee concept and is aimed at promoting English literacy through a fun program that fuels the competitive spirit amongst grade 4 to 6 learners.
Wordplay is however not the only exciting project that the centre has in the pipeline - an investment of another kind is also imminent for this popular and growing shopping centre. Liberty Life Properties is to invest R329 million in a major expansion and refurbishment program at the centre.
The project will add a further 30 000 square metres to the retail area and entrench the centre's status as the preferred shopping destination of the Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha communities.
Construction work is scheduled to start in March 2008, with completion anticipated by April 2010.
The investment decision recognises the position of Mitchells Plain as one of the Western Cape's fastest growing residential areas, said Caswell Rampheri, Managing Director – Liberty Life Property Development.
The extension will result in a total gross lettable area of 82 000 square metres, making Liberty Promenade the largest shopping centre in a previously disadvantaged area.
