Apple in logo row with supermarket

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Australian supermarket chain Woolworths on Tuesday, 6 October 2009, said it was being challenged by US-based technology giant Apple over the use of a logo the computer company claims resembles its own.

"They have lodged an objection but they have not made a case," Woolworths spokeswoman Clare Buchanan said.

Woolworths' swirly green branding, launched in August 2008 and still being rolled out in stores around the country, is intended as a 'W', she said.

"We absolutely say it is a stylised 'W' that can be any kind of fresh produce. Some people say it looks like a lettuce, some people say it can be a pumpkin," she said.

Apple, which uses an apple with a bite out of it as its logo, has lodged its objection with the government's intellectual property agency IP Australia.

Reports said Apple is concerned that Woolworths has applied for a blanket trademark for the design, which would allow it to place it on any type of product, even electrical goods such as computers and music players.

No comment was available from Apple in Australia.
