Record number of entrants for MultiChoice VUKA! awards

Entries for the 2004 MultiChoice VUKA! Awards have poured in to meet the recent closing date. Over 200 entries have been logged so far, in both professional and newcomer categories. Entrants range from top advertising professionals, to media students and first timers.

The MultiChoice VUKA! Awards are one of the honours given in the film industry. Its premise is about telling a story in 60 seconds in the form of a PSA (Public Service Announcement). These PSA's are representative of charities, NGO's and other worthy causes of public interest and the impact has strong social themes. The lucky winners will have their PSA's continually broadcasted on MultiChoice DSTV network channels in the year following.

These awards have made careers and highlighted causes of national importance including, Arrive Alive, Child Abuse, Gun Free South Africa, plight of street children, cancer and AIDS sufferers and many more issues of countrywide importance.

Popular themes of PSA's submitted for this year have topped with children's charities and driver safety messages.

The MultiChoice VUKA! Awards is now in its sixth successive year is a recognized as a national institution. The Department Of Labour, National Film and Video Foundation together with the MultiChoice VUKA! Awards have implemented a programme called the Film Skills Development Programme which aims train eager previously disadvantaged people interested in getting into the film industry. This will work through a series of workshops run in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. It is intended that those individuals who succeed through the workshops, will be taught one important entry level film skill and therefore be in a position to be placed at a film company to maximize their skills and thus build a career in film.
